Script, storyboard, illustration, and animation

In partnership with the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), we developed a series of animated whiteboard videos titled "Science Drives Development." The series aimed to highlight the contributions of key Brazilian scientists such as Johanna Döbereiner and Milton Santos, emphasizing the essential role science plays in Brazil's development. Each video told the story of a notable scientist with an engaging and educational approach.

Context

Founded in 1916, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences is one of the most respected institutions in the country for promoting science and technology. Committed to disseminating scientific knowledge and showcasing the relevance of national researchers, ABC enlisted Lumi ED to create an educational video series. "Science Drives Development" was an initiative to popularize science among the general public by highlighting the achievements of prominent Brazilian scientists. The whiteboard animation format was chosen for its effectiveness in engaging and educating the audience in a simple and attractive manner.

Challenges

The main challenge was transforming dense scientific information into accessible and engaging content for the general public. Additionally, we needed to maintain scientific accuracy while generating interest and raising awareness about the importance of the featured scientists.

Objectives

Popularize the legacy of Brazilian scientists and raise public awareness of their contributions.
Promote the role of science in the country's social and economic development.
Use creative and educational animations to engage both academic and general audiences.

Process

Script and Storyboard
We crafted scripts that balanced historical narrative and scientific data, ensuring the content remained accessible. The storyboard was carefully designed to clearly and visually illustrate each scientist’s contributions.

Illustration and Animation
We created illustrations that captured the essence of each scientist and their discoveries. Whiteboard animation was chosen for its versatility and ability to simplify complex concepts.

Review and Approval
We worked closely with ABC to ensure the historical and scientific accuracy of the videos, making adjustments as needed to meet the Academy's expectations.

Results

The video series was widely shared by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences on platforms such as YouTube and social media, as well as at educational and scientific events. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, with high engagement from both academic and general audiences. The project helped raise awareness about Brazilian scientists and emphasized the importance of science for the country's development.

Below is the series dedicated to great Brazilian scientists who left a mark on the history of science in the country. Each video tells an inspiring story, highlighting discoveries that transformed fields such as agriculture, medicine, and geography, while driving national scientific development.

Johanna Döbereiner

In the first video of the series, we tell the inspiring story of agronomist Johanna Döbereiner, whose discoveries revolutionized agriculture by creating more sustainable and accessible methods for growing food.

Álvaro Alberto da Mota e Silva

The second video is dedicated to Admiral Álvaro Alberto da Mota e Silva, a pioneer in creating institutions such as CNPq and CNEN, which propelled scientific development in Brazil.

Marcos Luiz dos Mares Guia

In this video, we explore the journey of Marcos Luiz dos Mares Guia, responsible for significant advancements in diabetes treatment, including the development of human insulin.

Milton Santos

Finally, we tell the story of Milton Santos, an internationally renowned Brazilian geographer who used his expertise to propose urban and social solutions aimed at reducing inequality in Brazil.
